BORDERS, VALUES AND STABILITY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

This conference expands on works from the two previous Jean Monnet conferences, held in November 2017 and 2018, on the theme of ‘European Union and Peace: What Are the Advances Toward a Federal Europe?’. In the context of Brexit and its postponements, at a time when the very purpose of the European project is called into question, and when the Union is faced with crises that challenge its foundations, these works aims to provide a critical and forward-looking assessment of the dialectical link between the European Union’s unique nature and the objective of peace.

This year’s conference, held on 27 November 2019, thus establishes a link between the borders, values and stability of the European Union. Issues related to the Union’s stability/instability are approached from wide-ranging perspectives of the concept of a border, taking into account its different meanings and interpretations – including the physical, geopolitical, socio-cultural, institutional, material and functional natures of borders.

The same approach will be applied to issues of internal and external borders of the European Union, in addition to the systemic challenges presented by diversity and differentiation within the Union, as well as by Brexit.

These works will be carried out in four sessions: European Union Borders and State Differentiations/Divergences (Session I); European Union Borders and Territorial Diversity/Identity (Session II); European Union Borders and Homogeneity/Effectiveness of Shared Values (Session III); Borders and Stability/Advancements of the EU in the Context of Brexit (Session IV).
